As a young girl in the early 1800s, Late Romantic poet, Felicia Dorothea Browne, signed her aunt, Anne Wagner’s, friendship book with exquisite mixed media collages of sea life. In one, she identifies Sappho, the Archaic Greek lyrical poet who reportedly leapt from the Leucadian Cliffs, throwing herself to the sea, killing herself over her unrequited love for the ferryman Phaon.

From Felicia’s poem, “The Last Song of Sappho”:

I, with this winged nature fraught, These visions wildly free, This boundless love, this fiery thought — — Alone I come — oh! give me peace, dark sea!
