Melancholia installation view at Third Story Art
Melancholia in its entirety refers to the melancholy of the passage of time. I was especially thinking about the objects and relics that people find special and hang on to, objects that are meaningful and hold a certain magic, lucky charms of sorts. Why do some things get passed down and others not? Can a person’s lifetime be held in a single object? Is the essence of someone’s spirit left among their possessions? Is that why we cling dearly to certain objects — objects that become amulets of protection, like being wrapped up in your grandmother’s patchwork quilt or wearing your sister’s lucky rabbit foot around your neck? And what about those cherished objects that were once loved by complete strangers? What is that spirit magic that draws us in?
Nick Cave says, “We are made of ghosts, we grievers, and those spirits are forever beside us, as a protective force, part of the web of consciousness that interconnects all things.”
Yes. And the hope of a good life filled with meaning that engages us with the present, represented by that one special object.
